1 “Sing this funeral song for the princes of Israel:

2 “What is your mother? A lioness among lions! She lay down among the young lions and reared her cubs.

3 She raised one of her cubs to become a strong young lion. He learned to hunt and devour prey, and he became a man-eater.

4 Then the nations heard about him, and he was trapped in their pit. They led him away with hooks to the land of Egypt.

5 “When the lioness saw that her hopes for him were gone, she took another of her cubs and taught him to be a strong young lion.

6 He prowled among the other lions and stood out among them in his strength. He learned to hunt and devour prey, and he, too, became a man-eater.

7 He demolished fortresses and destroyed their towns and cities. Their farms were desolated, and their crops were destroyed. The land and its people trembled in fear when they heard him roar.

8 Then the armies of the nations attacked him, surrounding him from every direction.

They threw a net over him and captured him in their pit.

9 With hooks, they dragged him into a cage and brought him before the king of Babylon. They held him in captivity, so his voice could never again be hear on the mountains of Israel.

The Players:

Jerusalem: Like a young lioness (House of David, Jerusalem, the nations capital), royal among beasts and powerful.

Princes of Israel: An elegy, or lamentation, for Kings Jehoahaz and Jehoiachin.

King Jehoahaz (Shallum – Son of Josiah): King of Judah, (Did evil before The Lord). Pharaoh-necho took him from Jerusalem to Riblah, and from Riblah to Egypt, where he was put into chains, and there he died.

King Jehoiachin (Son of Jehoiakim): (Did that which was evil before The Lord) After being king for only three months he surrendered to Nebuchadnezzar. He remained in prison until the death of King Nebuchadnezzar some 36 years.

This parable of Ezekiel, is a lament, an expression of deep grief or sorrow.

Jehoahaz became a ruthless leader even to the harm of his own people. Other nations heard well of his cunning and ever present danger. Egypt snared him, and brought him with chains before Pharaoh. Beaten and defeated, Jehoahaz died in Egyptian captivity.

II Kings 23:31-34 NLT

31 Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months. His mother was Hamutal, the daughter of Jeremiah from Libnah.

32 He did what was evil in The Lord’s sight, just as his ancestors had done.

33 Pharaoh Neco put Jehoahaz in prison at Riblah in the land of Hamath to prevent him from ruling in Jerusalem. He also demanded that Judah pay 7,500 pounds of silver and 75 pounds of gold as tribute.

34 Pharaoh Neco then installed Eliakim, another of Josiah’s sons, to reign in place of his father, and he changed Eliakim’s name to Jehoiakim. Jehoahaz was taken to Egypt as a prisoner, where he died.

Then in Ezekiel's elegy, the lioness had a second cub, and that cub was represented by King Jehoiachin.

Jehoiachin did his best to imitate other surrounding, ruthless and wicked kings. Jehoiachin turned his own country upside down, “defiling the widows,” making cities desolate and empty. Then came the day when surrounding nations, the Chaldeans, Syrians, Moabites, and Ammonites marched against Judah, like a great hunter taking prey. They put him in chains, taking him to Babylon, his cries, as  a wild animal, to be heard no more.

II Chronicles 36:9,10 NLT

9 Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months and ten days. Jehoiachin did what was evil in The Lord’s sight.

10 In the spring of the year King Nebuchadnezzar took Jehoiachin to Babylon. Many treasures from the Temple of the Lord were also taken to Babylon at that time. And Nebuchadnezzar installed Jehoiachin’s uncle, Zedekiah, as the next king in Judah and Jerusalem.

33 But many people recognized them and saw them leaving, and people from many towns ran ahead along the shore and got there ahead of them.

Should we think that the gospel message was totally exclusive to the Jews and not to the Gentiles, what then of the following verses.

22 A Gentile woman who lived there came to him, pleading, “Have mercy on me,

24 Then Jesus said to the woman, “I was sent only to help God’s lost sheep—the people of Israel.”

25 But she came and worshiped Him, pleading again, “Lord, help me!”

26 Jesus responded, “It isn’t right to take food from the children and throw it to the dogs.”

27 She replied, “That’s true, Lord, but even dogs are allowed to eat the scraps that fall beneath their masters’ table.”

28 “Dear woman,” Jesus said to her, “your faith is great. Your request is granted.” And her daughter was instantly healed.

16 “Go and get your husband,” Jesus told her.

18 for you have had five husbands, and you aren’t even married to the man you’re living with now. You certainly spoke The Truth!”

19 “Sir,” the woman said, “you must be a prophet.

20 So tell me, why is it that you Jews insist that Jerusalem is the only place of worship, while we Samaritans claim it is here at Mount Gerizim, where our ancestors worshiped?”

21 Jesus replied, “Believe Me, dear woman, the time is coming when it will no longer matter whether you worship The Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem.

22 You Samaritans know very little about the one you worship, while we Jews know all about Him, for salvation comes through the Jews.

23 But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship The Father in Spirit and in Truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship Him that way.

24 For God is Spirit, so those who worship Him must worship in Spirit and in Truth.”

25 The woman said, “I know The Messiah is coming—the one who is called Christ. When He comes, He will explain everything to us.”

26 Then Jesus told her, “I am The Messiah!”

27 Just then His disciples came back. They were shocked to find Him talking to a woman, but none of them had the nerve to ask, “What do you want with her?” or “Why are you talking to her?”

28 The woman left her water jar beside the well and ran back to the village, telling everyone,

29 “Come and see A Man who told me everything I ever did! Could He possibly be The Messiah?”

30 So the people came streaming from the village to see Him.

31 Meanwhile, the disciples were urging Jesus, “Rabbi, eat something.”

32 But Jesus replied, “I have a kind of food you know nothing about.”

33 “Did someone bring Him food while we were gone?” the disciples asked each other.

34 Then Jesus explained: “My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent Me, and from finishing His work.

35 You know the saying, ‘Four months between planting and harvest.’ But I say, wake up and look around. The fields are already ripe for harvest.

36 The harvesters are paid good wages, and the fruit they harvest is people brought to eternal life. What joy awaits both the planter and the harvester alike!

37 You know the saying, ‘One plants and another harvests.’ And it’s true.

38 I sent you to harvest where you didn’t plant; others had already done the work, and now you will get to gather the harvest.”

1 Then this message came to me from The Lord:

2 “Son of man, give this riddle, and tell this story to the people of Israel.

3 Give them this message from The Sovereign Lord:

“A great eagle with broad wings and long feathers,

covered with many-colored plumage,

came to Lebanon. He seized the top of a cedar tree

4 and plucked off its highest branch.

He carried it away to a city filled with merchants.

He planted it in a city of traders.

5 He also took a seedling from the land

and planted it in fertile soil.

He placed it beside a broad river,

where it could grow like a willow tree.

6 It took root there and

grew into a low, spreading vine.

Its branches turned up toward the eagle,

and its roots grew down into the ground.

It produced strong branches

and put out shoots.

7 But then another great eagle came

with broad wings and full plumage.

So the vine now sent its roots and branches

toward him for water,

8 even though it was already planted in good soil

and had plenty of water

so it could grow into a splendid vine

and produce rich leaves and luscious fruit.

9 “So now The Sovereign Lord asks:

Will this vine grow and prosper?

No! I will pull it up, roots and all!

I will cut off its fruit

and let its leaves wither and die.

I will pull it up easily

without a strong arm or a large army.

10 But when the vine is transplanted,

will it thrive?

No, it will wither away

when the east wind blows against it.

It will die in the same good soil

where it had grown so well.”

11 Then this message came to me from The Lord:

12 “Say to these rebels of Israel: Don’t you understand the meaning of this riddle of the eagles? The king of Babylon came to Jerusalem, took away her king and princes, and brought them to Babylon.

13 He made a treaty with a member of the royal family and forced him to take an oath of loyalty. He also exiled Israel’s most influent leaders,

14 so Israel would not become strong again and revolt. Only by keeping her treaty with Babylon could Israel survive.

15 “Nevertheless, this man of Israel’s royal family rebelled against Babylon, sending ambassadors to Egypt to request a great army and many horses. Can Israel break her sworn treaties like that and get away with it?

16 No! For as surely as I live, says The Sovereign Lord, the king of Israel will die in Babylon, the land of the king who put him in power and whose treaty he disregarded and broke.

17 Pharaoh and all his mighty army will fail to help Israel when the king of Babylon lays siege to Jerusalem again and destroys many lives.

18 For the king of Israel disregarded his treaty and broke it after swearing to obey; therefore, he will not escape.

19 “So this is what The Sovereign Lord says: As surely as I live, I will punish him for breaking My covenant and disregarding the solemn oath he made in My name.

20 I will throw My net over him and capture him in My snare. I will bring him to Babylon and put him on trial for this treason against Me.

21 And all his best warriors will be killed in battle, and those who survive will be scattered to the four winds. Then you will know that I, The Lord, have spoken.

22 “This is what The Sovereign Lord says: I will take a branch from the top of a tall cedar, and I will plant it on the top of Israel’s highest mountain.

23 It will become a majestic cedar, sending forth its branches and producing seed. Birds of every sort will nest in it, finding shelter in the shade of its branches.

24 And all the trees will know that it is I, The Lord, who cuts the tall tree down and makes the short tree grow tall. It is I who makes the green tree wither and gives the dead tree new life. I, The Lord, have spoken, and I will do what I said!”

The Players:

Zedekiah: Judah's last king. Weak in military prowess, and weak in serving The Lord.

Nebuchadnezzar: Great Eagle #1, Powerful (Head of gold) Babylonian king.

Jechoiachin: Three months and ten days, king of Judah. Gave up under siege to Nebuchadnezzar, and so his servants and officers were carried away into captivity. Jechoiachin spent some 36 years in Babylonian prison. He is the Cedar Branch spoken of in verse 3.

Lebanon: Jerusalem (verse 3).

Canaan: Godless Canaan, namely Babylon, city of traders and merchants.

The Seed Of The Land: Verse 5, Zedekiah and his family. The seed grew and became a spreading vine vs. 6)

All seemed well. Zedekiah, though under captivity and obligation of tribute (of those who remained), had freedom and provision, courtesy of one King Nebuchadnezzar.

King Zedekiah had taken an oath to be loyal and subservient to Nebuchadnezzar.

Old Testament Teachings Concerning Oaths, that Zedekiah knew only too well:

Oaths, were a confession to The Lord and man, that a thing would be done.

Oaths, were a type of announcement to one and all, that The Living God saw all proceedings of man, and that when he swore an oath to God and man, he must fulfill that oath, or pay a terrible penalty.

Numbers 30:2 KJV

If a man vow a vow unto The Lord, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth.

Deuteronomy 6:13 KJV

Thou shalt fear The Lord thy God, and serve Him, and shalt swear by His name.

Deuteronomy 10:20 KJV

Thou shalt fear The Lord thy God; Him shalt thou serve, and to Him shalt thou cleave, and swear by His name.

Great Eagle #2: The King (Pharaoh) of Egypt:

7 But then another great eagle came

so it could grow into a splendid vine

and produce rich leaves and luscious fruit.

Though the vine was living and growing in luxury, under Nebuchadnezzar, and proud King Zedekiah had sworn an oath to The Lord, to serve him, he was now changing his mind and going after Egypt's King for its provisions.

II Kings 24:20 KJV

For through the anger of The Lord it came to pass in Jerusalem and Judah, until He had cast them out from His presence, that Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.

So, what did The Lord think of this reneging of King Zedekiah's sworn oath to The Lord and King Nebuchadnezzar?

Ezekiel 17:10 NLT

10 But when the vine is transplanted,

will it thrive?

No, it will wither away

when the east wind blows against it.

It will die in the same good soil

where it had grown so well.”

Help from Egypt meant nothing in light of the great power and might of King Nebuchadnezzar.

Judgment For Disobedience:

And Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came against the city, and his servants did besiege it.

The Lord shewed me, and, behold, two baskets of figs were set before the temple of The Lord, after that Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon had carried away captive Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, and the princes of Judah, with the carpenters and smiths, from Jerusalem, and had brought them to Babylon.

Vs. 22 a branch from the top of a tall cedar, a root from the house of David.

Vs 22 and I will plant it on the top of Israel’s highest mountain. (A Kingdom of Grace.)

Vs 23 It will become a majestic cedar, sending forth its branches and producing seed. Birds of every sort will nest in it, finding shelter in the shade of its branches. (Under its branches will dwell all nations.)

Matthew 13:31,32 KJV

31 Another parable put He forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field:

32 Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.

Vs. 24 The tall proud tree (King Zedekiah), has been cut down so that a lowly tree may be tall.

2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground..."

The Messiah, The Branch, would arise from humble beginnings, of the house of David.

This Messiah, is none other than the King of kings and Lord of lords, of His church, and of His kingdom, through all the earth, will have no end.

Reading the above verses, it is easy to see, there are two camps, of belief in the interpretation of Galatians 6:16.

Interpretation #1:

This is a collective scripture meaning (peace and mercy to) all Christian Jews and Gentiles (saved by faith) who are the Israel of God.

Galatians 3:26-29 KJV

26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Interpretation #2:

This verse refers to Christian Jews and Gentiles, saved by faith alone, in the finished work of Christ, they certainly have His peace.

Philippians 4:7 KJV

And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

And secondly, this verse refers to the unsaved Jewish nation, that they may have the mercy of God, for the day will come when they will turn to their Messiah Lord, and not to religious works.

Hebrews 8:10-13 KJV

10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith The Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to Me a people:

11 And they shall not teach every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know

Now is there a “hint,” which of the two we should hold to? Yes!

Paul usually uses the words “grace and peace, or mercy and peace,” but here in Galatians 6:16 the order is “peace and mercy.”

Paul has taught that Christians have God's peace, and that mercy is extended to those who do not know The Lord.

Romans 11:30,31 NLT

30 Once, you Gentiles were rebels against God, but when the people of Israel rebelled against Him, God was merciful to you instead.

31 Now they (Israel) are the rebels, and God’s mercy has come to you so that they, too, will share in God’s mercy.

It more than appears that interpretation #2 is correct.

Now before we leave this subject, there is a solemn truth we must never forget, namely if you are a Christian, your duty is to pray for the peace and salvation of Israel. How often have you prayed that?

And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Well, what is The Truth.

The Truth is, the Word Of The Lord, mentions no less than 3 kinds of death.

1.) Physical Death:

John 11:11-14 KJV

11 These things said He: and after that He saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.

12 Then said His disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.

13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that He had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.

14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.

2.) Spiritual Death:

Genesis 3:6-8 NLT

6 The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too.

7 At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.

8 When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard The Lord God walking about in the garden. So they hid from The Lord God among the trees.

Ezekiel 18:4,20 KJV

4 Behold, all souls are Mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is Mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die..."

Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

1 And you hath He quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

Genesis 3:8 KJV

And they heard the voice of The Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.

Isaiah 59:2 KJV

But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid His face from you, that He will not hear.

Jude 1:19 KJV

These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not The Spirit.

3.) The Second Death:

Revelation 20:10-15 KJV

10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are (Having been thrown in some 1,000 years before), and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

11 And I saw a great white throne, and Him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of Life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Adam's sin brought first and immediate, Spiritual Death, then some 930 years later, Physical Death.

The soul that sinneth, it shall die..."

Ephesians 2:1 KJV (Spiritual Death)

“...dead in trespasses and sins;

As the father of all lies, the serpent, the devil, lied, The Lord alone is The Truth.

John 14:6 KJV

Jesus saith unto him, I am The Way, The Truth, and The Life: no man cometh unto

The Father, but by Me.

Was there hope for Adam and Eve, Yes!

In their human reasoning they.....

Genesis 3:7 KJV

And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

But sadly, this was at best “self righteousness,” and nothing that would ever cover their sin.

The Lord had another idea.

Genesis 3:21 KJV

Unto Adam also and to his wife did The Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

The first person to kill an animal was The Lord, and He did it to clothe Adam and Eve, and to show them their confession of sin and animal sacrifice to The Lord, covered their sin.

Genesis 4:1-7 KJV (Adam and Eve's children knew this lesson, of confession and animal sacrifice, to The Lord, to cover sin.

1 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from The Lord.

2 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto The Lord.

4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And The Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering:

5 But unto Cain and to his offering He had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

6 And The Lord said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?

7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door..."

Under the old Covenant sins were covered, through sacrifices of spotless animals (The type of Christ.)

But then came the day when God sent into this world His perfect, sinless Lamb, His own Son.

Matthew 1:21 KJV (The Angel Of The Lord, spoke to Joseph.)

And she shall bring forth A Son, and thou shalt call His name Jesus: for He shall save His people from their sins.

II Corinthians 5:21 NLT

For God (The Father) made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.

Through The Blood of God's sinless Lamb, sins are forgiven, and cleansed, from those who confess and forsake them.

I John 1:9 KJV

If we confess our sins, He is Faithful and Just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Cain, thought he could design his own religion by his own ways and means, but he was wrong.

And many today, think they will not bow to Jesus Christ, nor confess to Him, but that too is the way of Cain.

Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

John 3:16-21 KJV

16 For God so loved the world, that He gave His Only Begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

17 For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved.

18 He that believeth on Him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of The Only Begotten Son Of God.

19 And this is the condemnation, that Light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than Light, because their deeds were evil.

20 For every one that doeth evil hateth The Light, neither cometh to The Light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

21 But he that doeth Truth cometh to The Light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
