Rendlesham Forest/Bentwaters AFB

From Out of the Blue'.

"They had heads out of proportions with their body, and their eyes were like inverted cat eyes".

"It's coming this way. It's definitely coming this way... There's something very, very strange," zegt de deputy commander op een gegeven moment.

Quote:HALT:

I see it, too. What is it?

VOICE: We don't know, sir.
VOICE: Can I just have a...

HALT: It's a strange, small red light, looks to be maybe a quarter to a half mile, maybe further out. I'm gonna switch off.

Nato Col. Larry Warren:

US Air Force, Nuclaire veiligheidsofficier

1980: a federal suit is a case in point. The case was filed in the US District Court of the District of Columbia against the National Security Agency (NSA) for 156 UFO documents the agency refused to release. The NSA provided U.S. District Court Judge Gerhard A.Gesell with a 21-page, Above Top Secret affidavit justifying the withholding. No one else was permitted to see the affidavit. The judge dismissed (!) the lawsuit stating that:

"public interest in disclosure is far outweighed by the sensitive nature of the materials and the obvious effect on national security their release may entail."

Above Top Secret, in which he stated:

"The evidence that there are objects which have been seen in our atmosphere, and even on terra firma, that cannot be accounted for either as man-made objects or as any physical force or effect known to our scientists seems to me to be overwhelming... A very large number of sightings have been guaranteed for by persons whose credentials seem to me unimpeachable. It is striking that so many have been trained observers, such as police officers and airline or military pilots. Their observations have in many instances... been supported either by technical means such as radar or, even more convincingly, by... interference with electrical apparatus of one sort or another..." (Good, T., ibid.)

UFO INCIDENTS AT RENDLESHAM FOREST, ENGLAND

Several UFO incidents, including multiple-witness sightings by military personnel and ground traces with above normal radioactive readings, were reported in late December 1980 at the Rendlesham Forest in Suffolk, England. The site was near two then-important NATO Nuclear Air Force base leased to the U.S. Air Force: RAF Bentwaters and RAF Woodbridge.

Although details and dates reported by various investigators in the past decade are somewhat confusing,

there is an official DECLASSIFIED (FOIA) record of the case in a memorandum to the British Ministry of Defence (MOD), signed by USAF Lt. Col. Charles I. Halt, Bentwaters Deputy Base Commander:

"SUBJECT: Unexplained Lights TO: RAF/CC

"1. Early in the morning of 27 December, 1980 (approximately 0300L, or 3 a.m. local time), two USAF security police patrolmen saw unusual lights outside the back gate at RAF Woodbridge. Thinking an aircraft might have crashed or been forced down, they called for permission to go outside the gate to investigate. The on-duty flight chief responded and allowed three patrolmen to proceed on foot. The individuals reported seeing a strange glowing object in the forest. The object was described as being metallic in appearance and triangular in shape, approximately two to three meters [7 to 10 ft.] across the base and approximately two meters [6.5 ft.] high. It illuminated the entire forest with a white light. The object itself had a pulsing red light on top and a bank of blue lights underneath. The object was hovering or on legs. As the patrolmen approached the object, it maneuvered through the trees and disappeared. At this time, the animals on a nearby farm went into a frenzy. The object was briefly sighted approximately an hour later near the back gate."
94

In addition to Col. Halt's summary, testimony was provided by the USAF patrolmen involved in the case. Law enforcement airman John Burroughs wrote an official deposition of his experience after spotting some lights while on patrol near Woodbridge's East Gate:

"We stopped the truck where the road stopped and went on foot. We crossed a small open field that lead into the trees where the lights were coming from and as we were coming into the trees there were strange noises, like a woman was screaming, ALSO the woods lit up and you could hear the farm animals making a lot of noise and there was a lot of movement in the woods. All three of us hit the ground and whatever it was started moving back towards the open field and after a minute or two we got up and moved into the trees and the lights moved out into the open field."
95

Burroughs drew a sketch of the object in his official statement. (see sketch below) In a 1990 interview, Burroughs described the object as:

"A bank of lights, differently colored lights that threw off an image of like-a-craft. I never saw anything metallic or anything hard."

Yet the most interesting part of his testimony is not the presence of the lights, but rather his sensation of an altered state of consciousness:

"Everything seemed like it was different when we were in that clearing. The sky didn't seem the same... it was like a weird feeling, like everything seemed slower than you were actually doing, and all of a sudden when the object was gone, everything was like normal again."
96

The testimonies of Burroughs and the other members of the USAF security patrol were confirmed the following day by the finding of ground traces with radioactive readings in the forest. Col. Halt summarized the events in his memorandum to the MOD:

"2. The next day, three depressions 1.5 feet [.5 m.] deep and 7 feet [2 m.] in diameter were found where the object had been sighted on the ground. The following night (29 December, 1980) the area was checked for radiation. Beta/gamma readings of 0.1 milliroentgen were recorded with peak readings in the three depressions and near the center of the triangle formed by the depressions. A nearby tree had moderate (.05-.07) readings on the side of the tree toward the depressions." 97

Col. Halt, moreover, became directly involved in the UFO incidents when he led a second patrol into the forest two nights later. He made an audio tape recording describing live the puzzling events of that night. While the tape runs for about 20 minutes, it covers a span of over three hours, so there are obviously cuts in between. The tape describes their efforts to carry on the radiation readings quoted above and, as the night goes on, the voices become increasingly excited as strange lights appear in the forest:

"OK, we're looking at the thing, we're probably about two or three hundred yards. It looks like an eye winking at you. It's still moving from side to side and when you put the starscope [a night vision device] on it, it's like this thing has a hollow center, a dark center. It's a bit like a pupil of an eye looking at you, winking, and the flash is so bright through the starscope that it almost burns your eye."
98

Sketch with notes by USAF law enforcement patrolman John Burroughs of the UFO he encountered at the Rendlesham Forest after Christmas 1980. Courtesy of Antonio Huneeus.

Col. Halt summarized these events in the third part of his memo to the MOD:

"3. Later in the night, a red sun-like light was seen through the trees. It moved about and pulsed. At one point, it appeared to throw off glowing particles and then broke into five separate white objects and then disappeared. Immediately thereafter, three star-like objects were noticed in the sky, two objects to the north and one to the south, all of which were about 10 degrees off the horizon. The objects moved rapidly in sharp angular movements and displayed red, green and blue lights. The objects to the north appeared to be elliptical through an 8-12 power lens. They then turned to full circles. The objects to the north remained in the sky for an hour or more. The object to the south was visible for two or three hours and beamed down a stream of light from time to time. Numerous individuals, including the undersigned, witnessed the activities in paragraphs 2 & 3."
99

Charles Halt discussed the case again after retiring from the USAF with the rank of full colonel.

He told the TV program Unsolved Mysteries in 1991:

"I was very skeptical. I found what allegedly had taken place hard to believe, and I was really going to debunk it quite frankly; and as events unfolded I became more and more concerned that there maybe is something to this... I kept telling myself that there had to be some type of explanation for it, but I certainly couldn't find one and even to this day I can't explain what happened."

Col. Halt alluded to the military implications of the event when describing beams from the object pointing to the weapons storage area a Woodbridge:

"We could very clearly see it... I noticed other beams of light coming down from the same object falling on different places on the base. My boss was standing in his front yard in Woodbridge and he could see the beams of light falling down, and the people in the weapons storage area and other places on the base ALSO reported the lights."
100

Many accounts and commentaries have been published on the Rendlesham Forest or Bentwaters incidents. Some, like the appearance of ghost-like entities, are still enveloped by controversy. The Rendlesham events have been mentioned in both the House of Commons and the House of Lords, and looked into by Nebraska Senator James Exon.
101

A re-examination of the Rendlesham Forest UFO incidents was undertaken recently by Nick Pope during his 3-year tour as head of the MOD Secretariat Air Staff (AS2) office, which inherited the UFO reporting function from DS8. Mr. Pope checked with radiation experts as to the significance of the 0.1 milliroentgen of beta/gamma readings taken by Col. Halt's patrol:

"I went to an organization called the Defense Radiological Protection Service, which is a unit attached to the Institute of Naval Medicine near Gosport, Hampshire, and they told me that the levels of radiation reported by Col. Halt in that memo were ten times what they should be in that area compared to their background samples."
102

British author and researcher Ralph Noyes was for four years the head of Defense Secretariat 8 (DS8), retiring in 1977 with the rank of Under Secretary of State. He wrote regarding this case:

"Our worried skeptical colleagues have already had to advance an extraordinary hotch-potch of explanations: space debris, a bright meteor, a police car, drink and drugs, a lighthouse, other lights on the coast, dear old Sirius.

"Occam, you will remember, urged us to cut away unnecessary complications in our attempts to explain phenomena and to look for the simplest explanation. The simplest explanation of Halt's memorandum is that he was reporting - as precisely as wondrous events permit - what he and 'numerous individuals' encountered on December 29/30, together with such facts as he had been able to ascertain from his subordinates about the occurrences of December 26/27."
103

Having met a number of the military witnesses, Jenny Randles is clearly aware of this factor.

Sadly, a number of the sceptics do not seem to have the same understanding of the way in which the military operate.

Bearing in mind the above point, the key document is still
Col. Charles Halt's memo,
and its mention of a "strange glowing object" which was "metallic in appearance and triangular in shape, approximately two to three meters across the base and approximately two meters high".

As a senior officer he had no qualms about being more forthcoming, because he was clearly aware of policy, and knew that there was a requirement to report details of any UFO sighting to the Ministry of Defense.

Let us now turn to the Physical Evidence.

This consists of the damage to the trees in the clearing where the metallic craft was seen on the first night of activity, the indentations at the point it apparently landed, and the radiation readings taken from these trees and indentations. In "Open Skies, Closed Minds" I revealed the results of the first and only official investigation into this aspect of the case, detailing my inquiries with the Defense Radiological Protection Service.

The official assessment was that the radiation readings recorded were ten times what they should have been for the area, although I should stress that the radiation was low level, and would not have posed any danger to those present.

Ian Ridpath has highlighted some legitimate doubts about the suitability of the equipment used to record the radiation levels, and further suggests that Halt may even have misread the dial on the Geiger counter.

Whilst I accept these points, I should explain that any official investigation can only be based on the data received by the Ministry, and not on such speculation - intriguing though it may be.

But one can actually set aside any debate about the precise level of the readings, on the basis that the readings can only be considered in their proper context. In other words, we need to consider the events collectively, not individually. We have a sighting of a UFO, coupled with tree damage and indentations in the very same clearing in which the UFO was seen.

Then we have radiation readings which, irrespective of how high they were, just happened to peak where the trees were damaged and in the very center of the indentations.

We should ALSO remember the fact that Halt's memo explains how "the animals on a nearby farm went into a frenzy" when the object was seen. While none of this proves that the UFO was of extraterrestrial origin, it seems clear that there was an object of some sort involved, which had an effect on the surrounding environment.

The skeptics clearly disagree, returning to the theory that all the UFO sightings were misidentifications of the Orford Ness lighthouse or the Shiplake Lightship, or even of stars, and that the indentations in the clearing were caused by burrowing rabbits!

When I met Charles Halt he was dismissive of this, and confirmed that he and other witnesses were familiar with the lighthouse, which was indeed visible as an entirely separate object for some time during his actual UFO sighting.

Furthermore, as he explained on the "Strange But True" documentary on the case, "A lighthouse doesn't move through the forest; the lighthouse doesn't go up and down, it doesn't explode, doesn't change shape, size - doesn't send down beams of light from the sky".

Long after the events concerned, questions are still being asked about this case in parliament, both in the House of Commons and the House of Lords, by MPs and Peers who are clearly alive to the Defense and National Security implications of the incident.

When seeking expert analysis on a case such as this, one really cannot obtain a more authoritative view than that of Admiral of the Fleet The Lord Hill-Norton, a former Chief of the Defense Staff and Chairman of the NATO Military Committee.

With the greatest respect to the skeptics, Lord Hill-Norton is considerably better qualified to analyze an incident such as this.

Commenting on the case he has said "It seems to me that something physical took place; I have no doubt that something landed....either large numbers of people....were hallucinating, and for an American Air Force Nuclear Base this is extremely dangerous, or what they say happened did happen, and in either of those circumstances there can only be one answer, and that is that it was of Extreme Defense Interest.........."

29 December 1980: Huffman, Texas, in the evening, three witnesses in a car saw a bright object hovering over the road. While standing outside to watch it, two of the witnesses (Betty Cash and Vicki Landrum) were injured by radiation. As the object departed they noticed many helicopters flying around it. They suffered long term injuries such as would be expected from exposure to high levels of radiation.

Features include mission statement, current cases, video clips & video cam,
background, media updates and cases of "high strangeness"
(one of our favorite USAF terms!).

Since July 2001

the US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA)

The UFO reporting instructions

are in Section 6, par. 7-6-4,

1964: UFO Evidence. Report by Richard Hall, of NICAP (National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena - 746 classic cases from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s reported by pilots, engineers, scientists, etc.  Well documented. NICAP files are now archived by CUFOS.

1968: Congressional Hearings. July 29, 1968. Symposium on Unidentified Flying Objects, Hearings before the Committee on Science and Astronautics, U.S. House of Representatives,

Ninetieth Congress. Included testimony and prepared papers

by Drs. Hynek, McDonald, Carl Sagan and other scientists.
The very detailed and well documented McDonald Report summarized the best documented UFO cases up to that time.

1969: Condon Report. Scientific Study of Unidentified Flying Objects,
conducted by the University of Colorado under the direction of Dr. Edward U. Condon. Includes 117 well documented cases, reviewed by aeronautic experts, physicists and astronomers. Dr Condon's well publicized introduction attempted to disclaim the UFO phenomena, yet 30% of the cases --admittedly-- could not be explained by any "natural" theory. (Published by New York Times/Bantam Books, 1969.)

1984: Clear Intent. The first book, by Lawrence Fawcett and Barry Greenwood, to publish the declassified UFO files of the U.S. government. (Reprinted by Simon & Schuster with the title: The UFO Cover-Up, 1992.)

1988: Uninvited Guests. By Richard Hall, Aurora Press.

1990-96: The UFO Encyclopedia, Three Volumes. By Jerome Clark, Apogee Books.

1 - UFO Sightings:

UFOCAT. Computer catalog of raw UFO sighting reports from around the world, initiated in the 1970s by Dr. David Saunders.
It has over 50,000 reports from five continents and is currently maintained by CUFOS.

2 - Ground Traces:

Catalog of UFO landing cases where plants and soil were affected, initiated by Ted Phillips in the 1970s.
It has approximately 5,500 reports from 66 countries. The last printed catalog was published by CUFOS.

3 - Pilot Cases:

NASA scientist Dr. Richard Haines has kept a computerized catalog of UFO sightings by military,

civil, test and private pilots since the early 1980s. More than 3,600 cases have been logged,

including many in which electromagnetic effects were also detected by the aircraft instruments.

Dr. Haines has published several papers on aspects of his pilot UFO catalog.

4 - Vehicle Interference Catalog:

Mark Rodeghier of CUFOS compiled in 1988

a catalog of 441 UFO reports in which car engines,
batteries or radios malfunctioned in close proximity to a UFO.

Ufo a Deadly Concealment

The Official Cover-Up

Author Derek Sheffield
Publisher: Blanford Press
Date: 1996

My personal rating: 9/10

An absolutely terrific book from a UK author and one that I personally

recommend to all would-be researchers/investigators of the UFO phenomenon.

The book takes the form of a journal of events surrounding the famous 1989 and 1990 Belgium sightings of triangular craft, which were witnessed by 13,500 people and tracked on 5 different NATO radarstations and also chased by the Belgium Air Force.

(2 F-16's)

The story follows the authors efforts to obtain information from both the Belgium Authorities and the British MOD. (Ministry of Defense)

Initially the author has some success with the Belgium authorities,
in so much that the confirm the radar traces and the Air Force attempts at interception.

However the story quickly changes and you can almost feel the frustration of the author as his first 5-6 letters all go missing or are returned to him opened and without explanation.

The next series of letters get through but it met with standard letters of denial and contradictory statements by both governments.

During the book several aspects of UFOlogy are covered to give the reader some additional background on the subject and all the letters that he sent plus their replies are included in this book.

The author shows us how an investigation should properly be handled and he comes across as a very genuine and sincere individual who is baffled by the letters from his and other Governments concerning the incidents.

He has also made a successful appeal to the European Parliament
for an investigation into these unexplained phenomena.

A very good book to add to your collection.

1987: Above Top Secret.

By Timothy Good.

World wide cases, very detailed

and well documented.

Originally published in England.

(American edition published by Quill William Morrow, NY, 1989.)

 Above Top Secret Timothy Good:

This was one of the first books that I read and it is still one of the best.
Tim Good presents his points of view in a very clear and concise manner.

The book deals with the way in which various governments have tried to cover-upthe UFO phenomena from the public.

The book contains loads of smaller cases from around the globe from mostly military personnel and pilots, people who would in general be less likely to lie, mis-identify etc. regarding the objects that they have been seeing.

Most of these cases are backed up by official documents and testimony from the various governments and witnesses.

I believe that this was one of the first books (if not the 1st) to publish details of the Majestic-12 documents.
At the time there was still no evidence that these documents were hoaxed and this section does make fascinating reading.
Tim Good does however say several times that he is dubious of the documents but believes that although the documents could well turn out to be false that the information they report are essentially correct.

The book has a very large Appendix (making the book look bigger than it actually is) of official documents, and eyewitness testimonies.

Geloven .... dat is wat de -meeste-

journalisten steeds maar weer vragen:

"gelooft u in ..." alsof het

allemaal maar "vaag" is
kan het nog dommer ?

of spelen ze dom ? ...

wat is dan erger ?

Maar gelukkig zijn er steeds

meer mensen in de media die
WEL eerst hun huiswerk doen en

daardoor intelligentere vragen gaan stellen !
